Androgenic alopecia in women

Androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness, is a condition that can occur due to hormones and genetic predisposition, starting from the top of the head and progressing to the sides, leading to hair loss. It is commonly observed in men, which is why we also refer to it as male pattern hair loss. The primary cause is the binding of androgen hormones to hair follicle receptors, resulting in hair loss.

In women, genetic factors play a significant role. However, hormonal causes must also be investigated. The most common cause is a condition known as polycystic ovary syndrome, which causes irregular menstruation and increased hair growth. Other hyperandrogenic conditions can also be responsible. Sometimes, even when all hormone levels are found to be normal, our patients can still experience androgenic alopecia. In this case, we can discuss the heightened response of receptors, meaning the body may produce an excessive response to low levels of hormones, leading to this condition.

In cases of androgenic alopecia in women, any underlying conditions must be treated. Additionally, treatments such as stem cell applications, PRP, and hair mesotherapy can be beneficial for our patients. If there is accompanying increased hair growth and acne problems, the use of cyproterone acetate is recommended. For laser hair removal and, if necessary, treatment of stubborn acne, medications like isotretinoin can be utilized.

Treatment is personalized. It is essential for both dermatologists and endocrinologists to evaluate the situation together. The success rate of treatment is generally higher for female patients. We provide treatment for all our patients with susceptibility and hormonal disorders starting from adolescence.

Early diagnosis and treatment of male pattern hair loss can yield promising results. It would be beneficial to consult a dermatologist for hair loss issues.
