Is it harmful to use a razor blade for laser hair removal?

There are three types of laser mechanisms used for laser hair removal. These are the Alexandrite laser system, Diode laser system, and Nd-YAG laser system. With the Alexandrite laser system, there is no need to shave, as this system burns off the hair on the skin's surface. However, this system is not recommended for tanned skin because while burning the hair, it can also cause burns and lead to pigmentation issues on the skin. Additionally, it is not recommended for facial hair and fine hair as it can cause these hairs to grow thicker and more abundant.

In ice laser systems, like the ones we use in our clinic, and other laser systems, it is necessary to trim the existing hair with a razor. This is because the devices target the hair follicle. To prevent heating and burning of the skin surface, a razor or trimmer must be used.

Now, let's get to the main question. When using a razor, as is known, the hair roots remain, and only the length of the hair is shortened. A few days later, the laser light is applied, targeting the hair follicle. Within approximately 15-20 days, the hairs begin to fall out as their roots are burned. Studies in the literature have shown that all root-removal methods cause the hair follicles to thicken. However, studies where trimming was done with a razor observed that the hair follicles did not thicken, but because the hair grows back quickly, it can be visually bothersome. Another situation is that when hairs are removed from the root, about 80% of the hairs can be seen on the skin's surface each time. This is because a portion of our hairs (about 80%) is in the growth phase, while the rest is in the transition and shedding phases. When using a razor, all of our hairs synchronize, meaning we start to see 100% of our hairs on the surface, which can give the impression of an increase in hair. However, since the hair follicles are treated very shortly after (usually the next day) during laser hair removal, the possibility of thickening is entirely eliminated.

In summary, shaving your hair during and even after laser hair removal when the hair is thinning does not increase or strengthen your hair. Your hair will continue to grow as it naturally does. Therefore, during the laser hair removal process, including the facial area, shaving can be done safely and confidently.
