What are the misconceptions about acne?

Acne is an adolescent problem.

Incorrect. Acne can occur at any age. The mechanism of acne formation is simple. First, the pores become clogged with sebum and epithelial debris. Then, blockage leads to bacterial colonization and the formation of acne. This process, which starts in adolescence, can continue into adulthood. While the primary problems during adolescence are increased sebum production and hormonal changes, inappropriate product usage often leads to cosmetic acne in older ages. Regardless of age, our goal is to eliminate the underlying problem and offer targeted, personalized treatment options. In our clinic, treatments are applied through fractional laser, dermapen therapy, medical skincare, and dermatological examinations.

If I don't squeeze my acne, it won't leave a mark.

Incorrect. Some acne, specifically the nodulocystic type, is among the most severe forms and can leave scars even if patients do not squeeze or pick at them. Therefore, acne should be treated promptly. In cases of nodulocystic acne, oral isotretinoin medications such as Roaccutane or Zoretanin may need to be used for 6 to 9 months. Even so, if scars remain after treatment, fractional laser treatments can be applied once the medication is finished.

Acne medications cause infertility.

Incorrect. This misconception is often heard regarding isotretinoin medications like Roaccutane and Zoretanin. These medications do not cause infertility. However, it is crucial for individuals taking these medications to use at least one form of birth control to avoid pregnancy, as the medication is not to be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Having oily skin means I don't need to use moisturizer.

Incorrect. A proper skincare routine is important in acne treatment. Along with prescribed medications, suitable cleansing and moisturizing products are good allies in treatment. An oil-free, water-based moisturizer should be part of your daily routine. Additionally, using a water-based vitamin C serum in the morning and a retinoic acid serum at night is often recommended.

In summary, acne is a skin disease. Underlying conditions and diseases need to be addressed. Personalized treatment options should be decided in collaboration with the patient, taking into account their skin needs and social life. I should also note that acne treatment is a long-term process. Please do not trust unqualified individuals who claim that a single medication or treatment can resolve all your complaints. Entrust your treatment and skin care to your dermatologist.
