What happens if I squeeze the pimple?

The basic mechanism behind acne vulgaris formation involves clogged pores. When pores become blocked with sebum and dirt, they appear as blackheads (comedones) or whiteheads (closed comedones). At this stage, if we try to squeeze them, there is a chance of damaging the pore wall, though the risk is lower.

So, what happens when bacteria settle on pimples? They appear as red, yellow-topped inflamed bumps. We dermatologists refer to this as an inflamed papule. If we squeeze the pimple at this stage, we damage the pore wall and spread the bacterial infection, leading to more pimples. The damaged acne lesion then progresses to the next stage, known as a nodule, which is a deep-seated, scarring form of acne. Nodular acne is significant because it causes discomfort due to pain and can leave scars if not treated correctly and effectively.

In summary, at no stage of acne formation should we squeeze or pick at the pimples. It is essential to treat acne with appropriate medical skin care (such as carbon peeling, TMC peeling, etc.), topical treatments, and if necessary, systemic therapies. Remember, acne is a skin condition. For proper medical treatment, please consult your nearest dermatologist.
