When can I get rid of my hair with laser hair removal?
Thanks to the new and developing technologies, laser hair removal provides a permanent way to get rid of unwanted hair. As you may already know, our clinic uses the original Soprano Ice Platinum cold laser hair removal system, which can emit all laser wavelengths, including Nd-YAG (1064nm), Diode (810nm), and Alexandrite (755 nm), from a single device. You can find more about the advantages of the Soprano Ice laser in my previous blog posts. In this post, I will focus on how lasers work and answer the question, “How many sessions will it take to get rid of my hair?”
When we look at skin anatomy, we see that it consists of three layers. The epidermis is the outermost layer, which protects our skin from external factors. Below it is the dermis layer, containing hair follicles, blood vessels, and connective tissue that nourish the hair and skin. Beneath that is the subcutaneous fat tissue.
In terms of laser systems, Alexandrite laser reaches the surface layer, Diode laser penetrates deeper layers, and Nd-YAG laser reaches the deepest layers, depending on the wavelength. This means that Nd-YAG lasers are the most effective for fine and deeply embedded hairs. Additionally, Nd-YAG laser also effectively eliminates small blood vessels, enhancing hair removal. However, since this laser system heats the skin, it can be painful. The cold laser (Soprano Ice laser) system solves this pain problem with its cooling handpiece.
The goal of laser hair removal systems is to shed hairs that are in the growth phase (anagen phase). Body hair grows and sheds independently and asynchronously. Each session targets the hair in the growth phase, and while other hairs also shed, they grow back weaker. Eventually, the formation of new follicles stops, creating hair-free areas. Of course, the growth cycle, hair type, racial characteristics, gender, hormonal structure, and even the areas of the body (e.g., arms vs. legs) vary from person to person, affecting the number of sessions needed. It is essential to stay committed to the process and attend your sessions regularly.
The areas with the highest percentage of anagen hairs are the beard and upper lip. The areas with the lowest percentage are the lower legs and arms, meaning these areas may require longer sessions to see results. However, these percentages can vary depending on the person and race.
Body Area | Anagen Hair (%) | Telogen (Shedding Time) (Months) |
Beard | 70 | 2.5 |
Upper Lip | 65 | 1.5 |
Underarms (Axilla) | 30 | 3 |
Genital Area (Pubis) | 30 | 3 |
Arms Lower Legs |
20 20 |
4.5 6 |
Based on this data, our clinic has set session intervals to 1.5 months, and for facial areas, sessions may be scheduled every 1 month depending on the need.
Effective hair removal is achieved with effective devices and personalized doses. I recommend having your treatments done in specialized clinics with ministry-approved devices.
